Why Should Your Company Utilize Such A Service?

In today’s age of our whole business, professional, and private lives being saved on computers how can we afford NOT to have multiple backups of our data. With a fully automated backup solution service such as ours, all ones selected data is backed up to a remote location. In the event of a fire/terror related event/hard disk or computer failure your data can be retrieved from another PC and simply downloaded off of our servers via a web page or via our easy to use software or a DVD with the encrypted data can be sent over night to you.

Why Should Your Company Trust Us With Your Sensitive Data?

Even though the data is sitting on our servers, we DO not have access to the data when you utilize an encryption key!! OnlineBackupVault.com can NOT see yours files even if we wanted to!!! You set the password, and it’s yours ONLY. In addition the data is highly compressed, the data residing on our servers is not expandable or readable without the encryption key which you set. Encryption is a technology that protects your data from anyone being able to see the data without the decryption key. By default the system uses your account password as your encryption key, if you change this key we can NOT assist you in retrieving it. Certain privacy laws require that you change this password when utilizing a system such as ours. In addition, if you change your encryption key once a backup set is created, you must delete the previous backup job and rerun the full backup. Please Note, there is no way for us to retrieve an encryption key and you should mark down in a secure location all such keys that you create. For more information please see our “whitepapers & manuals” section or click on Whitepapers & Manuals as well as our LEGAL & TOS for more information.

I have a tape drive, Why do I need Online Backup?
They are too numerous to list but here is a sample:
  • Remote Access – Access your Data offsite. In the event of a fire or server/computer theft you can be backup in business in a short time!
  • Support – We are IT People, we developed the software to make it easy to use and are here to assist you!
  • Non-removable Device – Tapes can be stolen easily, putting your business at risk!
  • Manage Your Data From Multiple Locations – Manage and review your backups for multiple locations in one simple web site. Easy to use with Graphic User Interface, All point and click, No fancy options, no hard to use custom programming.
  • Accessibility – Online Restores are simple and you can give the username/password to whomever you want to be responsible to restore data in the event of a mistaken file deletion or catastrophe. No need to dig up tapes!
  • Restore Direct to Source – Restore your data without searching through tapes, looking for the right archives!
  • Scalability – New employees? New Servers? More videos/pictures??Simply upgrade your account to backup more data. No need to buy bigger tape drives!!

Our service works like regular data backup software, with one important difference. Instead of sending backups to a tape drive or other media attached to the computer, it sends the data securely over the Internet to our backup servers safely offsite. Our system is completely automatic. In fact, you may even forget it's working. Most businesses put their lives on the line every day and don't realize it. With businesses depending more and more on the data in their computers, proper backups are becoming increasingly critical. Tired of tape backups? You're not alone. Tape backup has been around for more than 25 years and still has a 50% failure rate. More than 50% of employees back up their data to a misconfigured tape backup system (Iron Mountain). More than 34% do not test their backups and those that tested (77%) found their tape backup failed to recover (Storage Magazine). Nearly 50% of tape-based backups (or backup systems) fail to restore correctly (Gartner Group). Tapes wear out, just like a VHS, but you can't tell by visual examination whether it's still good or not. Tape drives are expensive and difficult to replace; new tapes cost $30 to $180 per unit and should be rotated out of service bi-monthly. To be effective, tape backup needs to be run daily, but it's easy to miss a day (or a week). People forget to rotate the tapes.

Whats the deal with the Free Backup Solutions advertised online?

There seems to be 3 breeds of online backup providers. Free Services, Free Starter services   (limited gigabit backup) and paid backup services. Below we will go through each. Remember - If something is to good to be true, it usually is!!

  • Free Services - Many of the free services appear to be free, However as everyone knows, everyone is in business to make money! (nothing like honesty!) The way many of the free services make their money is 1. they let you backup for free..So your wondering where the catch is....The catch is They charge you for the bandwidth used!, they tell you they are letting you backup unlimited space, however you are paying for the Internet transfer data spaced used. Another method some of the "free" providers are using is allowing you to backup - no cost- when you need a file back they charge you an extranomical amount to restore data, and some even charge you the astronomical amount plus bandwidth usage!! In addition the "free" services don't backup your servers applications such as sql/exchange for "free".  Remember - Nobody works for free.....

  • Free Starter Services - Some companies are giving you a free 1 or 2 gig account others are charging you $2 or more per gigabit used. So you are wondering that sounds like a good plan!...Its not!! The overage fees are tremendous, and you are bound on a contract and once you get over the 2 gig limit and you want a full backup plan the "professional" plans are many times more expensive that OnlineBackupVault.com. In addition most of the competition using this model charges you for every additional feature, such as backing up servers, or the amount of server and the type of data you are backing up! We charge you a flat fee regardless of how many servers/workstations you are backing up! Remeber - Nobody works for free....

  • Paid Backup Services - We feel we are the best!!! We took our product to the street and asked everyday users the features they need/want. We offer a full residential package and a full busyness package each meeting all the needs of the respective markets! We don't charge you extra when you need to restore, we dont charge you extra if you backup 5 computers, 10 computers or 1 computer, we dont charge you bandwidth usages, 1 flat fee no catches no games. We play an honest straight game!

How Do I know which backup plan I need?

To determine the total amount of space you u have used on your computer, double click on “My Computer”, then highlight the “C” drive, right click and go to “Properties”. The amount of data on that drive will be shown in the dialog box.
To see how much data you have, please go to “My Computer” icon and highlight any directory or file you want to include in your online backup. Once highlighted, right click and go to “Properties”. The amount of data in that directory or file will be shown in the dialog box. You must add together the data in all the files and directories you want to back up, to determine what data plan to choose. It is easy to mistake, so add carefully!
To see how big a plan you need to purchase if you backup mapped network drives, double click on “My Computer”, then highlight the “C” drive, right click and go to “Properties”. The amount of data on that drive will be shown in the dialog box. Then highlight the mapped network drive you want to include in your backup, right click and go to “Properties”. The amount of data on that drive will be shown in the dialog box. Add the “C” drive data to the mapped network drive data, and the sum will be the amount of data you have to back up.

The above methods are tips, and are not 100% accurate because you might have saved your data in other locations than those specified. Whatever your total numbers are, we then recommend you buy a 50% larger plan as we hold multiple versions of your files to help protect you and allow you to restore previous versions of a file.

My computer broke how do I get back my data?
OnlineBackupVault.com makes data recovery simple. Click on the restore tab, select the files you need, the date of the revision of the file that you want to retrieve then select the location where you want to place the files that will be restored, and then simply hit restore. It is important to note that with our residential software if you have a computer/hard drive failure - BEFORE running the backup software on your new computer your should do a restore. OnlineBackupVault residential software is only allowed to be installed on a single machine, by running a backup before restoring your data you may overwrite your previous data – so it is very important that you do the restore before running a backup! With our Business (OBV Corporate) software if you want to a backup on a new machine PRIOR to doing a restore it is essential that you give the backup set a NEW name and not the same name as a previous backup job. If you do give the new backup job the same name (example “file backup 1”) then you will override your previous backup! You must do a restore within the set retention time to be able to pull back your data. (please see FAQ above regarding retention policies)
    Go to Top
What happens if you need something back from a week ago?
The server has a feature called retention. You can set this feature for the period you require. Residential Plans allow up to 14 days and business allows you to setup custom retention polices. Please note that both Residential and Business plans default to 7 days.
